Taxes & Fees

What you pay, and who sets it.

Your TravelFirst quote shows all cost components. Here is what each one is, who sets it, and what it covers.

How to read your TravelFirst quote

Your quote breaks down all cost components individually. TravelFirst does not combine or hide any cost component inside another. The agency fee is always a separate, clearly labeled line item. Government taxes, airport fees, and carrier surcharges are included in the airfare component and collected by the airline or accredited ticketing partner — not by TravelFirst.

Government Taxes

Set by governments. Collected with airfare. Not set by TravelFirst.

Government taxes on airline tickets are levied by national, state, and local governments as part of the cost of air travel. These taxes are mandatory and are not discretionary — neither TravelFirst nor the airline has the ability to waive or modify them.

Government taxes commonly appearing on US-based itineraries include:

  • US Federal Excise Tax — a percentage-based federal tax on domestic airfare
  • September 11 Security Fee (US) — a per-segment security fee mandated by US federal law
  • US International Departure/Arrival Taxes — federal taxes on international itineraries
  • Foreign government departure taxes — taxes imposed by the governments of origin or destination countries

TravelFirst does not set government taxes.

Government taxes are collected as part of the airfare component of your booking, charged by the airline or accredited ticketing partner. TravelFirst passes these through without markup. The amounts shown in your quote are estimates at the time of research.

Airport Fees

Set by airports and port authorities. Not set by TravelFirst.

Airport fees are charges set by airport authorities and port authorities, collected to fund airport infrastructure, facilities, and operations. Like government taxes, these fees are not set or controlled by TravelFirst or by airlines.

Airport fees commonly appearing on itineraries include:

  • Passenger Facility Charges (PFCs) — US airport facility fees approved by the FAA
  • International arrival and departure fees — fees levied by airport authorities in origin or destination countries
  • Airport improvement fees — infrastructure improvement charges at specific airports

Airport fees are included in the airfare component of your quote.

Airport fees are collected as part of the total airfare component charged by the airline or accredited ticketing partner. TravelFirst does not set airport fees and does not mark them up.

Carrier Surcharges

Set by the airline. Included in the airfare component. Not set by TravelFirst.

Carrier surcharges are fees imposed by the airline itself on top of the base fare. These fees are determined solely by the airline's pricing and commercial policies.

Common carrier surcharges include:

  • Fuel surcharges (YQ/YR) — airline-imposed surcharges originally related to fuel costs; now commonly a general carrier-imposed fee
  • Carrier-imposed service fees — additional fees the airline may impose as part of a fare's pricing structure

TravelFirst does not control carrier surcharges.

Carrier surcharges are part of the airline's fare structure and are included in the airfare component of your quote. TravelFirst does not set, control, or mark up carrier surcharges. They are charged by the airline or accredited ticketing partner as part of the airfare.

TravelFirst Agency Fee

Set by TravelFirst. Always a separate line item. Never embedded in airfare.

Agency Fee Disclosure

The TravelFirst agency fee is set by TravelFirst LLC. It is always shown as a separate, clearly labeled line item in your quote and authorization document. It is never embedded within the airfare component, government taxes, airport fees, or carrier surcharges. The statement descriptor for TravelFirst charges will read: TRAVELFIRST.

What the agency fee covers

The TravelFirst agency fee is the compensation for TravelFirst's advisory and booking coordination services, which include:

  • Flight research and itinerary development based on your specific request
  • Quote preparation, including fare research and cost breakdown
  • Booking coordination with accredited ticketing partners
  • Advisor support throughout the booking process
  • Written authorization document preparation and delivery
  • Post-booking confirmation and record-keeping

The agency fee is charged by TravelFirst LLC, not by the airline.

The airfare component (base fare + government taxes + airport fees + carrier surcharges) is charged by the airline or accredited ticketing partner. The agency fee is charged separately by TravelFirst LLC and will appear on your statement as a separate transaction or under the TRAVELFIRST descriptor, as disclosed in your authorization document before you authorize.

What the Agency Fee Is Not

Common misconceptions, clearly addressed.

The TravelFirst agency fee is sometimes misunderstood. Here is what it is not:

  • A processing fee
  • A convenience fee
  • A carrier fee or airline charge
  • An administrative fee
  • A service charge imposed by the airline
  • A tax of any kind
  • Part of the airfare component
  • Set by the airline

The agency fee is the compensation TravelFirst charges for the human advisory, research, and booking coordination work it performs. It is a service fee charged by TravelFirst LLC for TravelFirst's services — distinct from, and in addition to, the airfare component charged by the carrier.

Fee Refundability Summary

What is refundable and under what conditions.

Refundability of the components in your quote depends on the type of charge and applicable fare rules.

Fee Type Refundable? Conditions
Government Taxes Typically yes If ticket is refunded per airline rules; some taxes may be non-refundable by law (varies by country). Processed through airline/ticketing partner.
Airport Fees Typically yes Generally refundable if the ticket is refunded per airline/fare rules. Processed through airline/ticketing partner.
Carrier Surcharges Follows fare rules Refundability follows the airline's applicable fare conditions. Refundable fares generally include surcharges; non-refundable fares generally do not.
TravelFirst Agency Fee Non-refundable after ticket issuance The agency fee is non-refundable after ticket issuance. Exception: For eligible bookings (US-originating, made at least 7 days before departure, cancelled within 24 hours of booking confirmation), the agency fee is refunded in full — no discretion applies. See Refund Policy for full details.

Airfare refundability is determined by the fare rules of your ticket, not by TravelFirst.

Whether the airfare component (base fare, taxes, fees, surcharges) is refundable is determined by the fare rules associated with your specific ticket and the operating carrier's policies. TravelFirst will advise you on fare conditions before you authorize, but final refund decisions for the airfare component rest with the operating carrier.

For full details on refund processes and timelines, see Refund Policy.
